Stuck in the snow
Dec. 19th, 2009 01:48 amWell, not anymore, but I was. Did you know that even Cadillacs that weigh a freakin' ton don't like snow? Yeah, they don't. Oh - driving in it - no problemo - but 'through' a drift? Nope. Nuh-uh. Not gonna happen. (Said 'drift' was the result of snow plows shoving snow off the main road.)
So, yeah, I made it to within a half-mile of my house and got stuck. This is really good, b/c I made really good time on what's normally a 12 minute drive - until the getting stuck part. Called ye olde parentals and they hoofed it out to where the car was (in the blustering snow, no less) w/ the snow shovels. By the time they showed up, I was on the phone with roadside assistance via my insurance company being told that it could take up to 8hrs for someone to show up and winch the car out. Of course, calling up R/A means that some folks in a 4x4 show up with a winching rope to haul the car out. As a matter of fact, TWO 4x4's showed up. For the record - yes, all you gotta do is call for a tow and crazy people who are drive around in bad weather to drag people out of the snow show up in droves. At least here in my town they do. Totally NOT complaining about the folks showing up. Hooked the car to the back of the 4x4, stuck 'er in drive, gave 'er a push and off we went over the snow bank. The car would drive from there - slowly and only in the pre-existing tire ruts, but it was moving.
Getting stuck was totally accidental, though I did realize that had I swung the turn a lot wider (like, banking a 747 wide), I'd probably have been just fine and made it out of the middle of the road (well, the middle of the entrance to my road), but what's life without an 'I got stuck in the snow' story? However, I don't want to have any more stories like that.
